Luanne Caraway
Certified Registered
Tax Assessor-Collector (RTA)

Job Description

The Tax Assessor-Collector is elected for a four-year term. The Hays County Tax Assessor-Collector performs a wide range of duties for the citizens of our county. Most citizens utilize this office more frequently than any other county office.

The Tax Assessor-Collector is the constitutional office directed to assess (calculate) and collect all ad valorem (property) tax accounts as identified and valued by the Hays Central Appraisal District. Once the tax rates are set by the various taxing jurisdictions, the tax bills are calculated and then mailed to the taxpayers of Hays County.

The Hays County Tax Office collects property taxes for all taxing jurisdictions in Hays County, currently 35, including school districts, cities and special districts. These jurisdictions save your tax dollars by contracting with the Hays County Tax Office to process their collections.

The Tax Assessor-Collector acts as an agent for the Texas Department of Transportation in registering and titling motor vehicles and trailers owned by residents of the county. In this capacity the Tax Assessor-Collector is also responsible for the collection of motor vehicle sales tax and forwarding those funds to the Comptroller of the State of Texas.

In addition, the Tax Office collects beer, wine and liquor licensing fees for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
